Teeth Whitening: Vanity or Essential
Even when you just take a quick peek at those pesky (and maybe inspiring for some, to each his own) teeth whitening commercials where the models just magically transform from very shy people to overwhelmingly confident sirens and dashing men all after trying the teeth whitening product that apparently turns it around for them in a complete 180 degrees. Of course, all that is exaggerated but not any less true. You want to stand out as having the prettiest smile or get noticed by people and people do care if you have whiter teeth!
Just looking at those teeth whitening commercials where at first they have the model having yellowish teeth and feeling a little short on confidence, being shy and generally not wanting to participate in group conversations even. After trying the teeth whitening product, it just shows them smiling brightly the whole time, having guts that they didn’t have before and overall just feeling good about themselves. Of course, those ads are exaggerated (as they always are in my opinion) but they are true nonetheless. People do care if you have whiter teeth!
Now while it’s true that this is hardly the only thing people look at, and probably not at the top of the list in the long run, your teeth bear a significant importance in how you present yourself to people for the first time. In other words, how you want your first impressions to go. Let’s face it, people look at our faces and already have opinions about what kind of person we probably are and what type of things we might be into. There tends to be all these stereotyping going on inside their heads which, for all we know, could end up being as disastrous as them not liking us at all just by looking at us for the first time. God forbid that happens.
So what do you do? You look for teeth whitening options of course. There are several options to consider as well. Generally, there are 2 types of teeth whitening procedures that are common today: In-office whitening and at-home whitening. But first, in order to be more effective in undergoing the teeth whitening process, we must at least familiarize ourselves with the main cause or causes of stained teeth.
In today’s society, people are really inclined to think that having stained teeth automatically equates to having poor oral hygiene and this, in turn, translates into the need for us to whiten our teeth in the first place so that we will not be seen as ‘having poor oral hygiene’. Now this is definitely a factor but hardly the only one. We need to consider other things as causes for this like the type of food that we eat and drink, whether we smoke (relatively big contributor), medicine and naturally, aging which even varies genetically in rapidity.
Now that really isn’t our fault for the most part. A huge chunk of it is natural. Still, it doesn’t really look too good. Teeth whitening is available as an option with keyword ‘option’ for some people who’d prefer to look…good. There might be others who’d argue that it is not necessary and you can go through your whole life not doing this at all and still be clean and presentable. But then again, we can go back to the keyword ‘option’. Choosing to go through this option will simply make you feel better about yourself.
Getting your teeth whitened certainly has its share of perks to keep up with the potentially indulgent amount of money you’d be spending for it. Most of these will be stemming from your boosted self-confidence around people, friends or new acquaintances alike. One can definitely go through life without having a single teeth whitening session but having the extra sparkling white teeth to carry around with you is a perk more and more people are certainly considering having.
Ultimately, it does depend on you. You can see it as a futile attempt to become noticed by people or become popular or you can see it as an effective way to deal with issues of self-confidence and become more assertive as a result. You can look at it as yet another money-wasting activity that would get you nowhere or you can look at it as an investment to better yourself. You can certainly carry the idea that if you take care of yourself, you can give back to yourself more. As for me, I’d have my teeth whitened any day of the week. In fact, I already did!
