Licenses and Permits
Before you start any small business you will have to go to your local courthouse to get all of the necessary licenses and permits that you must have for your business. They will be able to tell you exactly what you’ll need and help you with the paperwork for starting a lawn business.
Choosing Your Equipment
Before starting a lawn business you first must decide what kind of lawn services you will be offering. You may strictly just want to mow lawns. Then the basic equipment you will need would be a dependable mower, a trimmer or weed whacker and a broom to sweep off the sidewalks. (You must not leave a mess after you mow.) This is the minimum that you can start your business with. If you want to offer other services such as mulching, gutter cleaning, hedge trimming, etc…then you will need to have the necessary tools to perform each job.
How To Give Estimates
This is a very important part of starting a lawn business. You must be able to give estimates that aren’t too low that you lose money and on the other hand, if you are too high then you won’t have much business. An easy way to give an estimate is to figure out how long it will take you to do a lawn and then charge one dollar per minute. So if a yard takes you an hour to do, then you have made sixty bucks. You can also call around to other lawn services in your area and see what they are charging so you can stay in line with their prices.
There are many other aspects to starting a lawn business, but these are three of the most important things that you will need to do first. Once you have your business license, a good mower and can estimate a job, then you can get your lawn business started right away.
