Quick and Easy Businesses to Start

I remember when I got my first real job right out of college. I was on top of the world, doing what I went to school for and learning so much on the job. After awhile, I began to feel like there was something more for me than simply sitting in a cubicle. I worked at my previous job for 5 years when I resigned. Something that I feel helped me reduce the stress in my life and provided me with more freedom than I had working for someone else.

I understand the frustration that many people deal with trying to figure out how to start a business right away. Below are some ideas that I have used (and some I still use) to become self-employed.

1. Freelancing – This is an easy transition for many employees. They simply take what they do for their current employer and do it for themselves as a freelancer. Many people start part-time while they are still employed, build up a client list, and then take off on their own when the income is steady. If you already enjoy what you do for a living, this could be a good option.

2. Working online – Many people earn their income online by selling products, creating a popular web site, or earning commissions on sales of products (also known as affiliate marketing.) There are various ways to make money online. Just do a quick search and you will find hundreds of web sites with advice on how to start. Just be cautious of “get rich quick” schemes that may make it seem like it is all easy. Working online should be treated like a business, not a form of easy money.

3. Create your own product – I’ve worked with people who have started businesses selling products they have created. For example, I knew a woman who designed her own diaper bags, had them manufactured, and sold them at various baby expos as well as online. You can find manufacturers that will produce your products and you can market them and sell them wholesale.

4. Network marketing – This is one of the easiest ways to become CEO of your own company. It is also one of my favorite ways to make a living. It is like purchasing a franchise but without paying hundreds of thousands of dollars. You choose a company whose products you enjoy using and feel comfortable promoting. You sign-up with the company and invest a one time fee (usually between $40 and $200.) You are then officially your own boss and run your own business.

Do your own research and keep track of what interests you. The best thing about starting your own business is that you can do it while you are still employed for someone else.
