How Other People Can Help You Achieve Your Goals

Way back in the 1600s John Donne said that “No man is an island” and it’s as true today as it’s ever been. While we all like to feel self sufficient, the truth is that we can accomplish far greater things when we involve the help of others. Here are three ways that you can lean on other people to help you achieve your goals.

Build your accountability.

Obviously, accountability has two major components to it. For one, you need to enlist the aid of at least one friend or family member whom you can trust… to make sure you don’t cop out and just give up at the first sign of adversity. With this person, you must share your goals and your timelines for the completion of those goals. Ask them to call you on a specific day, to confirm that you have completed your goal or goals. Of course, you only want to use a trustworthy, supportive person – if they don’t believe in you, that won’t help. If they berate you for faltering, that’s not much better.

And the other way to build accountability is with yourself – obviously, you are the responsible party here, and the person most likely to be affected by your success or failure. You can start out by setting a small objective or two each day, and making sure you complete what you set out to do. As time passes, those small objectives will accomplish a surprising amount – especially as you start to mix in more ambitious objectives. After awhile, you’ll start to get it – you CAN accomplish pretty much anything you set decide to do, and actually put in the effort for.

Ask for help.

The best cure for being overwhelmed… is to not get into ridiculously difficult situations in the first place. But if that fails, Plan B is to ask for help. This can include getting your family more involved in household chores, or trading errands and chores with a neighbour or two. You don’t need to do everything all by yourself, especially if you’re working toward an exceptionally large goal… besides, that may not even be possible. It takes a certain kind of strength to evaluate the situation realistically, and admit that you just can’t handle it by yourself.

Choose a role model.

If there’s someone more successful than you, they most likely know something you don’t. If all else fails, if you can set up a conversation or an interview with this person, you might be able to dodge a lot of the early mistakes we each tend to make, as we begin a new endeavour. And they may even be a source of useful contacts.
