Just recently I worked for a company that did not share my ethics in business. I am glad I am no longer affiliated with them. Their policies were legal but to me unethical and deceptive.
Years ago when I worked in the Garment district in New York I worked for one company for 9 plus years. Actually the owners left another company and took me with several workers to this new enterprise. I always said I was there when there wasn’t a pen on the desk.
Because of reasons the main owner left to start this business but always had it in for the company we all left originally. Years later financiers wanted to merge his company with the old company we all had left ego prevailed. Now revenge was sweet he was in charge of both companies. Unfortunately things don’t always work out as planned. Decisions made from a negative place, such as ego, seem to never go right.
After the merger I was moved to another position as a purchaser but continued to work for head guy. Unfortunately a head guy is just that when he its’ someone else’s money, in other words, a high paid worker. I started to feel they wanted him out so they needed to remove all the people directly around him. First they tried to harass me to quit that didn’t work. Then after weeks they called me in an office with 4 guys accusing me of all kinds of things. Telling me about an order I was getting paid off for, taking graft, it’s been over 20 years and I don’t remember all that was said. I do remember digging in and starring back at those bozos and standing tough. Yes I was angry and soon to lose my job but I wasn’t going to let them force me out. I never did anything wrong so I knew all that “information” was words. Finally I guess they figured I wasn’t important enough so they gave me a severance package and I was gone.
The head guy had a partner and a few years later I ran into him he told me that they found out soon after I was gone that the other purchaser was taking all kind of pay-offs. I had told them at the time if anyone was it was this guy but they still wanted me out. While I was glad for the confirmation little matters unless it comes when it’s really needed like in the movies, at the eleventh hour.
Some how doing the right thing and standing up for yourself may cost you but in the long run sometimes the truth comes out and sometimes it doesn’t but you know the truth and that’s what shapes your character. Your character is what employers hire, what customers trust and coworkers depend on.
Integrity isn’t just a word it’s a persona.
